Laila Ali – No daddy’s girl

Standing 5ft 10in in her boxing boots, attractive Laila Ali knew she was expected to model or act: ‘I could if I wanted to, but that’s not me. Boxing is not a fly-by-night thing for me. I’m always hearing “you’re so pretty why do you box?” If I were ugly, would people feel more comfortable with it?

Mozambique’s sprint queen

When I saw Nelson Mandela for the first time, I couldn’t speak. I was shocked and humbled that he had wanted to meet me. He had always been my hero. Meeting him gave me the power to go on.’ Says Maria Mutola when she lost her zest for running after Sydney 2000

In a league of her own

"I myself wasn't paid to play butit's a brilliant opportunity for the kids coming through.  Four or five years ago it wasn't possible.  It's a real step forward."  Said England Ladies captain Hope Powell on the FA's £4 million Talent Development Plan.

POLO – Reclaim the game

Go to your average high-goal polo event around England and you might feel your worst fears have been realised. The atmosphere just oozes money and still the only ones wearing riding boots are men. Not all of them are white, however. Argentineans rule the roost when it comes to polo, where the gaucho – the cowboy of the Pampas – is a national icon. It’s also played extensively in Mexico, India, the Middle East and Pakistan

Keep on running

The XVII Commonwealth Games will be held in Manchester, from 25 July to 4 August 2002.  It will be the biggest multi-sport event ever to have taken place in the country, representing a unique opportunity to showcase Manchester, the North West and United Kingdom as the diverse, vibrant and multi-cultural places that they are.

In honour of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee the Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay, will take place before the start of the games. The baton will be passed from hand to hand, completing an epic journey, leaving from Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, March 11 and travelling to 20 Commonwealth countries, before returning to the UK on June 6. It will then pass through Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Wales and England for the next 50 days. The Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay is an exciting national celebration - so join in!
